22.11.2010

Claus Lamm recently published two papers:

Lamm, C., Decety, J., Singer, T. (2011). Meta-analytic evidence for common and distinct neural networks associated with directly experienced pain and empathy for pain. NeuroImage, 54, 2492-2502.

Using a meta-analytic approach, this paper demonstrates that

1. a core network consisting of anterior insular cortex and medial cingulate cortex is involved in empathy for pain,
2. that this network is also involved in the experience of pain in oneself, providing evidence for "shared representations" accounts of intersubjectivity which propose that sharing the sensations and emotions of others entails self-related representations of those sensations and emotions,
3. that empathy can be triggered using different neuro-functional mechanisms.

Perry, A., Bentin, S., Bartal, I. B., Lamm, C., Decety, J. (2010). "Feeling" the pain of those who are different from us: Modulation of EEG in the mu/alpha range.
Cognitive, Affective, & Behavioral Neuroscience (2010), 10, 493-504.

This study suggests, using electroencephalographic measures, that sharing the sensorimotor consequences of pain in others
- relies on both automatic and controlled processes
- that sensorimotor resonance also occurs in situations when dissimilar others do not feel pain in situations that are painful for ourselves,
- which implies the need for self/other distinction and top-down regulation during empathy for dissimilar others.
